Lane keep assist warning light: what it means and what to do

Car between two lane lines, often with a cross or exclamation mark.

Book this weekSafe to keep driving for now, but get it checked this week.

The lane keep system is off or has a fault. You can still drive, but the car will not help keep you in your lane. From 1 November 2026 a lit warning for this system is also checked at the WOF on cars that have it.

What it means

Lane keep assist uses a camera behind the windscreen. A dirty or damaged windscreen, a misaligned camera or a sensor fault can switch it off and show this light.

Can I keep driving?

Yes, but drive without its help.

What to do now

  1. Clean the windscreen in front of the camera and check the system is switched on.
  2. If the light stays on, book a check this week.
  3. Ask about camera calibration if the windscreen was replaced recently.

Common causes

  • A dirty or chipped windscreen near the camera
  • Camera needing calibration after a windscreen change
  • A sensor or wiring fault
  • The system switched off
