Engine temperature warning light: what it means and what to do

Red thermometer in waves

Stop nowPull over safely as soon as you can and get help.

The engine is overheating. Stop as soon as it's safe and switch off. Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

What it means

The coolant that keeps the engine at working temperature is too hot. Driving on can warp the cylinder head and cause a very expensive repair. A blue thermometer on some cars only means the engine is still cold, which is normal.

Can I keep driving?

No. Let it cool and get it checked.

What to do now

  1. Pull over and switch the engine off.
  2. Wait at least 30 minutes before touching anything under the bonnet.
  3. Once it's cool, check the coolant level in the see-through tank. If it's low or you see a leak, call for roadside help rather than driving.

Common causes

  • Low coolant from a leak
  • A failed water pump or broken belt
  • A stuck thermostat
  • A radiator fan that isn't working
