Low coolant light: what it means and what to do

Thermometer in waves with a level line, or a coolant bottle symbol.

Book this weekSafe to keep driving for now, but get it checked this week.

The coolant level in the car is low. Running low can lead to overheating. Top it up only when the engine is cold, and have a shop find out where it has gone.

What it means

Coolant keeps the engine at the right temperature. It rarely disappears without a reason, so a low level often means a small leak, a worn hose or a failing water pump.

Can I keep driving?

Only a short way, and watch the temperature. Stop if it climbs.

What to do now

  1. Park, switch off and let the engine cool fully before opening anything.
  2. Check the coolant level in the overflow bottle and top up with the type in your handbook.
  3. Book a leak check. If the temperature gauge climbs, stop and call for help.

Common causes

  • A slow coolant leak
  • A worn hose or loose clamp
  • A failing water pump or radiator
  • A faulty level sensor
