AdBlue warning light: what it means and what to do

Letters AdBlue with a droplet, or a tank with NOx. Diesel cars only.

Book this weekSafe to keep driving for now, but get it checked this week.

Your diesel car is running low on AdBlue, the fluid that cleans its exhaust. Top it up soon. If it runs out, many cars will not restart.

What it means

Newer diesel cars inject AdBlue into the exhaust to cut harmful emissions. The car counts down how far you can go before it is empty and then refuses to start.

Can I keep driving?

Yes until the range runs out. Top up before then.

What to do now

  1. Check the AdBlue range shown on the dash.
  2. Top up at a service station or parts store, or have a shop do it.
  3. If the light stays on after topping up, book a check this week.

Common causes

  • AdBlue running low
  • A faulty level sensor
  • A heater, pump or injector fault
