Hybrid and EV

Does a hybrid need special servicing?

Most of a hybrid service is the same as any car. A few extra items need a workshop that knows hybrids.

The short answerA hybrid needs the same oil, filter and safety checks as a petrol car, plus a few hybrid items: the inverter coolant, the hybrid battery's cooling fan filter, and a check of the high-voltage system. Brake pads often last longer because the electric motor does much of the slowing down.

What's the same

Engine oil and filter, air and cabin filters, tyres, lights, suspension and brakes. Use the oil grade the maker lists, which for many Japanese hybrids is a thin 0W-20 or 0W-16.

What's different

  • Inverter coolant: a separate cooling circuit for the hybrid electronics, with its own change interval.
  • Battery cooling fan and filter: usually under or beside the back seat. A clogged filter makes the battery run hot.
  • High-voltage checks: only trained technicians should work on the orange cables.

Battery health

Hybrid batteries often last well over 10 years. A workshop with the right scan tool can test each part of the battery and tell you how it's doing before you buy or sell.

Questions drivers ask

Can any mechanic service my hybrid?

Most can do the routine items. For high-voltage work and battery tests, choose a shop that lists hybrid and EV servicing.
