An oil change drains the old engine oil and fits a new filter and fresh oil. Most mechanics also look over the car while it is on the hoist.

How often does a car need an oil change?
Follow your handbook. Many cars are every 10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first, and some are shorter. Short trips, towing and dusty roads wear oil out sooner.

An oil change on its own replaces the oil and filter. A service adds checks and parts from your car maker's schedule. If your car is due a service anyway, ask for it as one job.
